Maryann “Batcha” L. Pertilla, 85, lifelong resident of Syracuse, passed away Thursday, April 29th at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Maryann was the daughter of the late Walter and Maryann (Pernakowski) Massaro and grew up on the North side of Syracuse where she was a 1952 graduate from North High School.

Maryann retired in 1982 after more than 20 years as a school bus attendant for the Syracuse City School District. She also worked for the Parks & Recreation Department as a crossing guard, lunch aid, and hall monitor. Maryann was a three-season athlete, playing baseball with the Turners Baseball League and a drama major performing with the Pompeian Players throughout her high school years. She bowled with several local leagues and was an avid Green Bay Packers Cheesehead. Maryann attended the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Church.

She was predeceased by her husband of 36 years, Carlyle Perilla, in 2004, a daughter, Linda Pertilla, in 2020 and by a brother, Leonard Walter Massaro in 2000.

Maryann is survived by her seven children: Marilyn Dixon, Karen (Walter) Howard, Anthony, Carlyle, Joseph, and Carolyne Pertilla, and Vanessa Fitzgerald; 12 grandchildren especially Donte, Tony, and Joshua, whom she helped raise; and 12 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family, c/o Carolyne Pertilla, 110 Gilbert St., Syracuse, NY 13208.

I’ll never forget all the times you’d let me stay the night with Tony and Josh, making us snacks and food. You were everyone’s rock that they leaned on, but now everyone will need to hold each other up without you here. you will be missed by everyone who’s ever met you. You raised such a great family and I’m so proud that your grandsons are my best friends. You’ve worked so hard over the years you deserve the rest, catch up with all your loved ones in heaven and continue to watch over us all like you always have. I hope you and my mom Ella and my step father John are hanging out and having laughs, until we meet again
