Charles “Chuck” “The Lawn Mower Man” Atkins, 84, longtime resident of Mattydale, died Thursday, January 24th at St. Jospeh’s Hospital. Born in Sperryville, VA, Chuck was the son of the late Frank and Freda (Dodson) Atkins. He grew up in Virginia before entering the US Air Force serving during the Korean War.
Chuck retired in 1978 after 27 years as a heavy equipment engineer for the US Air Force stationed at Hancock Field. Following that, he owned and operated Chuck’s Lawn Mower Service in Mattydale out of his home for 45 years. He loved country music and spending time with his family especially at cookouts. Chuck was a life member of Abundant Life Church in East Syracuse.
He was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, the former Shirley (Gangemi) and by a son, Jamie Atkins.
Charles is survived by his three sons: Charles L. (Darlene) Atkins, Jr. of Mattydale, John (Debbie) Atkins of Virginia Beach, and Thomas (Jennifer) Atkins of Central Square; a brother, John A. (Helen) Atkins of Missouri; and by several grandchildren, great grandchildren and a great great granddaughter.
Friends may call Thursday from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. Funeral Services are Friday at 10:00 am at the funeral home with burial in North Syracuse Cemetery following.
