Hilda M. Bates, 94, formerly of Earl Ave in Mattydale died Tuesday, June 9, at St. Mary's Hospital in Athens, Georgia. She resided at the Athens Health and Rehabilitation Center in Athens after suffering a stroke while visiting Athens in January 2007. She was the daughter of the late Ray and Mabel Stewart.
Hilda graduated from Eastwood High School and attended CCBI. She worked as a bookkeeper for many years at US Hoffman, the Hub Diner and F.R. Brice Florists. Hilda was the treasurer for nine years at the Mattydale Hinsdale Seniors, UMW, Mission Circle, and Taft Settlement Grange. She was a member of the Mattydale Hinsdale Park District, the Plank Road Chamber of Commerce, the Native American Elders Agency and served on the advisory board for the Salina Civic Center. She was also a 65 year member of the Ladies Auxiliary United Transportation Union and belonged to the Young at Heart Cicero Seniors, and a local Canasta Club. Hilda volunteered for 12 years for former assemblyman Michael Bragman and attended Calvary United Methodist Church in Mattydale. In 1995 Hilda was awarded "Citizen of the Year" by the Mattydale-Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce.
She was predeceased by her husband, Roy Bates.
Surviving are her daughter: Sandy Kim Walker and granddaughter: Marlana John Meehan, two great grandchildren: Kiersten & Keven Meehan, all of Athens GA; her grandson, Ryan Jaime Walker; great grandson Foster all of North Syracuse; and a close friend and neighbor: Lou Saccocci. Hilda is also survived by a long list of many loving friends and family.
Friends may call Monday from 4-7 pm at Krueger Funeral Home Inc., 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. Funeral service will begin Tuesday at 12pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in White Chapel Memory Gardens, Syracuse.
