August ?Gus? Bertolo, 85, of Mattydale, died Tuesday at Crouse hospital. Gus was a native of Syracuse and was the middle child of nine siblings born to the late Angelo Bertolo and Concetta Ponzio and resided in Mattydale since 1951.
Gus attended Vocational High School and later attended Columbia College. He was an avid boxer and gymnast in his youth. He was a Naval Veteran and served during World War II, Korean War, and participated in the Berlin Air Lift before retiring as a Chief Petty Officer with the US Naval Reserves. Gus retired in 1972 after 20 years as an electrician for the NY Central Railroad and also retired in 1984 from the Department of Defense where he was employed at the Griffiss Air Force, the Seneca Arms Depot and the Strategic Air Command at Hancock Air Base. Gus enjoyed gardening, wood working, dancing, boxing and spending time with his family. He was a communicant of St. Margaret?s Church. He also volunteered as a Little League Coach.
Gus was predeceased by his daughter, Marie in 1959 and his son, Daniel in 1983.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, the former Beverly Cody, his three daughters, Christine Bertolo, of Liverpool, Teresa Robert Polsin, of Cazenovia, and Mary Kay Bertolo, of Las Vegas, NV; his four sons, James Mary Bertolo, of Tully, Gary Bertolo, of Denver, CO, Jeffrey Bertolo, of Mattydale, and Dr. Scot Bertolo, of Columbus, OH; his 13 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brothers, Arthur Bertolo, of Syracuse, and Samuel Bertolo, of Atlanta, GA; his sister Helen Sarno, of Syracuse, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 1- 3 pm and 5-7pm Friday at Krueger Funeral Home 2619 Brewerton Rd. Mattydale. Prayer will be at 9am at the funeral home followed by Mass at St. Margaret?s Church at 9:45am.
