Josephine R. Boster, 94 died Tuesday, the day before her 95th birthday at Loretto Cunningham. She was a native of Lowell MA and was the oldest of six children born to the late L. Howard and Josephine Alexander. Josephine resided in Syracuse for most of her life in Syracuse including 42 years at 717 1st North Street. After graduating from Syracuse City Normal School, she received her Bachelor?s degree in teaching from the University of Buffalo in 1937. She taught in a one room school house in Orion NY for several years before entering the Women?s Army Corps during WWII. Her duties included sending and receiving Morse code messages and interpreting coded messages where she received several commendations for her actions.
Following the war she focused her life on raising her family but later returned to the workforce in the job placement division of the NYS Department of Labor for 13 years until her retirement in 1980. Josephine was a member of the Friedens United Church of Christ in Syracuse and sang in its choir. She also enjoyed traveling with her sister and visiting out of town relatives.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 31 years Sutton in 1974 and her son Lloyd in 1945. Surviving are six children Cheryl Fritz Smith of Palermo, Sutton Lorraine Boster of Cicero, Dennis Jeannene Boster of Lemon Grove CA, Joanne Boster of La Jolla CA, Brian Denise Boster of Yukon OK, Eric Brenda Boster of Syracuse, two sisters Louise Naylor of Manlius, Nancy Kelly of Constantia, 12 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Saturday from 10 to 11:30 am at the Krueger Funeral Home followed by a funeral service at 11:30 at the funeral home. Burial will be in White Chapel Memory Gardens, Dewitt.
