Earl J. Cayea, 84, of Garden City Drive, Mattydale, passed away Sunday at James Square Health Care Center. A native of Malone, Earl was the son of the late Raphael and Emma Cayea and resided in Mattydale since 1948. He also maintained a camp at Brennan?s Beach, Pulaski for the past 24 years.
He worked with the Civil Conservation Corps before the war and was an Army veteran serving with the armored brigade in the African and European theaters during WW II. Following the war he then served for 35 years with the Army National Guard at the Jefferson St. Armory.
He retired in 2004 after 32 years as a truck driver for SYSCO Foods in Warners. Earl was a devoted communicant of St. Margaret?s Church in Mattydale and served as a Eucharistic minister, a lector, a member of its bereavement committee as well as the Sacristan for many years. He was also a past Chief of the Mattydale Volunteer Fire Department.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years Doris VanSlyke in 1997 and a brother Ernest Cayea who died this past Summer. Surviving are two sons Earl R. Terry Cayea of Liverpool, Larry E. Cayea of Clay, a daughter Sheila A. Joseph Sellin-Foglietti of Mattydale, a sister Gladys Liepke of Syracuse, a brother Edward Cayea of Syracuse, 10 grandchildren, five great grandchildren Kaylee, Zoey and Baby Mike, C.J. and Anthony.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 pm Wednesday at the Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. Services will be at 9:30 am Thursday at the funeral home and 10 am in St. Margaret?s Church. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Marcellus.
