Helen Chappell

Helen M. Chappell, 95, passed away Friday, August 3, 2018 at St. Joseph's Hospital. Born in Syracuse, Helen grew up in Mattydale where she resided until 1976. She and her late husband, Elmer, then moved to the North Syracuse area. She was the daughter of the late John F. and Florence (Schaknoske) Smith. Helen retired in 1985 after 18 years as a secretary for the Syracuse City School District. She was a former member of the North Syracuse Seniors and the Collamer Senior Citizens. Helen was a parishioner of St. Margaret's Church where she volunteered for their Bingo team.

She was predeceased by her first husband, George M. Six in 1963, by her husband, Elmer Chappell in 2012, and by a son-in-law, Robert Dembowski in 2016.

Helen is survived by two daughters: Cathy Dembowski of North Syracuse and Maryanne (John) Fritzen of Liverpool; a step-daughter, Donna (Mel Kopp) Chappell of Delaware and a step-son, Gary (Donna) Chappell of Liverpool; 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Joyce (James) Lawless of Lafayette.

Contributions in Helen's memory may be made to Aurora of CNY, 518 James St., Suite 100, Syracuse, NY 13203 or to the Ronald McDonald House, 333 Westmoreland Dr., Rochester, NY 14620.

Friends may call on Sunday from 2 - 5 pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 am in St. Margaret's Church with burial following in Assumption Cemetery, Syracuse.
