Leo G. Choiniere, 82, formerly of 118 Campbell Road in Mattydale, died Friday at Loretto Cunningham. Leo was a native of Rouses Point, NY, where he grew up on the family farm and graduated from Rouses Point High School in 1949. He was the last surviving child born to the late George and Alida (Grenon) Choiniere.
Leo was a US Naval veteran of the Korean War serving aboard the heavy cruiser; USS Columbus Ohio. He worked at Railway Express for several years before entering the US Postal Service retiring in 1987 after 28 years as a supervisor of the rural route carriers in Syracuse. After that, Leo worked for many years as a valued employee with the Krueger Funeral Home. He was a life member and past president of the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Dept. joining in 1966 and served as Chief from 1977-1979. He was also elected to the Board of Fire Commissioners of Salina Consolidated Fire Dist. #2 where he served as Secretary/Treasurer for many years. Leo was a charter member and instrumental in organizing the North Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps in North Syracuse. He was also a member of the VFW Post #3146 and American Legion Post #1832 both in Mattydale, a member of the NYS and Onondaga Co. Chiefs associations, the Northern Section Line Officers assoc. OCVFA, FASNY, the former Third Ward Mens club and a longtime communicant of St. Margaret's Church.
Leo was predeceased by his wife of 42 years, the former Ruth Belzer in April 2001.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law: Keith and Debra Choiniere of York, PA; his
five grandchildren: David Blanchard, Christopher (Billie Jo) Blanchard, Andrew Blanchard, Sarah Blanchard, and Katherine Choiniere, all of York, PA; a great granddaughter, Lexie Blanchard; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 11am - 1pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. Funeral Services will begin at 1 pm at the funeral home following calling hours. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, Dewitt.
