Mary DeFonde DeTommaso, formerly of Warren Ave in Auburn, died Sunday at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was born in Bari, Italy and had been a resident in Auburn for 68 years before moving to Villa Scalabrini Apartments in Syracuse in 1996. Mary was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rose DeFonde.
She was employed by the former Firth Carpet Company as a burler for 32 years. Mary went on to work at Mercy Rehabilitation Center as a Housekeeper Supervisor for 12 years before retiring in 1981. She was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church and a member of its Sacred Heart Society. Mary also attended St. Peter's and Our Lady of Pompeii Churches in Syracuse.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Joseph DeTommaso in 1939; her brothers, Frank and Samuel DeFonde; and her sister, Sue LoCastro.
She is survived by her sister: Margaret Fortunato of Syracuse; her nieces & nephews: Rosemary Gauthier; Stephen, Eugene and Michael Fortunato; Rosemary Sindone; JoAnn DeFonde; Carol Krueger; Margaret Russo; and Samuel V. DeFonde; and many great nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Thursday from 4-7pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Road, Mattydale. Services are on Friday, 9:15am the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Pompeii Church at 10:00am. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Auburn.
