Shannon Froio, 6 year old daughter of Gayle and Jim Froio, of Cicero died Monday at her home with many of her loving family and friends at her side. Shannon was formerly of Croghan, NY and has resided in Cicero since 2004. Her father James is the Executive Principal at CNS High School and the former principal at Beaver River School District. Shannon attended Kindergarten at Lakeshore Elementary.
In July of 2004 Shannon was first diagnosed with Lymphoblastic Leukemia and was a patient of Dr. Sadowitz and later of Dr. Gloria Kennedy at University Hospital. After 2 ½ years of Chemotherapy, Shannon had a relapse and the search for a bone marrow transplant began. In December of 2004, an unrelated donor was found. Raven Russell, a 27 year old Angel, of Dalton City IL agreed not once but twice to donate to help Shannon at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC under the care of Dr. Nancy Kernan. Raven and her husband Cole visited on several occasions and became friends. In 2005 and 2006 the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society picked Shannon as their Patient Hero. Shannon and her Mom were guest speakers at the S.U. Orange Fan Luncheon, where they met Jim & Julie Boeheim and escorted Basketball players at the benefit auction including Matt Gorman who sang the Scooby Doo song to Shannon. She was also the 2004 poster child for ?The little gifts for life auction? for the Children?s Hospital. Shannon especially enjoyed her many trips to ?Build a Bear?.
In addition to her parents, Shannon is survived by her brother Jimmy and her sister Samantha, her maternal Grandparents Janet and Harold Millis of Westvale, Paternal Grandparents Dennis Karin Froio of Ponte Vedra Beach FL and Linda Bartholomew of Cicero, many aunts and uncles including her Godparents Mark and Kim Froio, Dennis and Tracie Froio, Kelly and Oliver Stuhlweissenburg, Nancy and William Bennett, Lynn and Vincent Evans, Gary and Sally Millis, Gordon and Tracey Miller, Terry and Juanita Smart, Louise and Guy Hurlburt, Scott and Terri Bartholomew, Many Cousins as well as her new pet Buddy the black Lab.
Calling hours will be 2 to 6 pm on Friday at the Krueger Funeral Home in Mattydale. Memorial services will be 2 pm Sunday at the Robinson Memorial Presbyterian Church 126 Terry Rd., Syracuse, NY. Private burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Contributions may be made to the Shannon Froio Foundation c/o Matt Root 8507 Longleaf Trail, Liverpool, NY 13090. The Funds are to be used for scholarships and helping kids with cancer and their families at University and Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospitals.
