Herbert C. Gondeck, 90, of North Syracuse, died Friday, October 28th, 2016. Herbert grew up on the family dairy farm in Kirkville. He graduated from Minoa High School in 1942 and was the son of the late Frank and Florence (Hubbs) Gondeck.
Herbert was a US Naval Veteran serving in the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Topeka during World War II. He was a member of the first ship entering Tokyo Harbor to eliminate their radar in order to attack. Upon returning home, Herbert settled in North Syracuse where he raised his family until recently and maintained a camp in Old Forge since the 1960's. He retired in 1986 after 31 years as a Field Service Engineer for IBM in Syracuse where he earned several Serviceman of the Year awards. Herbert was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, Bishop Curley Council #3717 in North Syracuse and a member of the Syracuse Mens Garden Club. He volunteered at St. Joseph's Hospital for over 25 years and was a square dance enthusiast. Herbert was a former communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Cicero.
He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, the former Helen (Cinq-Mars) in 2008 and by his brother, Donald Gondeck.
Herbert is survived by his two children: Mark (Tammy) Gondeck of North Syracuse and Ann (Ed) Yankay of Liverpool; five grandchildren: Jacqueline, Virginia, Elizabeth, James, and Andrew; his companion, Carol Phares of Manlius; and a sister: Marie Quiroga of AZ.

Friends may call on Sunday from 2:00 - 5:00 pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. Prayer Services will begin on Monday, 9:30 am at the funeral home followed by a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Margaret's Church in Mattydale. Burial will be in North Syracuse Cemetery.
