Earl Hawn

November 21, 1931 — January 28, 2011

Earl P. Hawn, 79, of Mattydale, passed away Friday at his home, surrounded by his family. As a young man, Earl was in the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country in Korea where he received a Purple Heart and ribbon having been wounded twice. After returning home from the war, Earl became a Marine Recruiter stationed in the Chimes Building. Following his military service, Earl was a Corrections Officer for 29 years at Jamesville Penitentiary where he retired. During his time at the Penitentiary, Earl also worked with Fleetwood Drywall for many years. He was an avid fisherman of Oneida Lake walleyes and loved being at his camp on the north shore of the lake where he fished and spent time with his family and neighbors. Earl was very generous to family, friends and others and was well known for his story telling over a cup of coffee.
Earl is survived by his wife of 60 years, childhood friend and sweetheart, the former Helen Perolla; two children: Earl Jr. of Marquette, MI, and Debbie Shriver of Smithfield, VA; a sister Trudy Vangel of Syracuse; his five grandchildren: Matthew Hawn of Edmunton, Canada, Kyle Hawn of Marquette, MI, Jessica Nelson of St. Paul, MN, Chris Shriver of New York, NY and Danny Shriver of Richmond, VA; two great grandchildren Cole Hawn and Amelia Nelson. Also surviving is his extended Perolla family of: Tony, George and Viv, Chuck, Robert and Jan & Dave Reichard.
Friends may call on Monday from 4-7 pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. A prayer service will begin at 9:30 am Tuesday at the funeral home followed by a 10 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Margaret's Church, Mattydale. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Contributions in Earl's memory may be made to St. Margaret's Church, 203 Roxboro Rd., Mattydale NY 13211.
