Roy S. Hughes Sr., 96, formerly of 309 Plymouth Ave. Mattydale, died Saturday at Elderwood Healthcare at Birchwood. He was a native of Syracuse and was the last surviving son of nine children born to the late Thomas and Mary White Hughes. He resided in Mattydale for 67 years before moving to Buckley Landing in 2007.
Roy entered the Army in 1930 and then served as a Sergeant in the Marine Corps in WWII. He was a machinist for 25 years with the Continental Can Co. in Syracuse and then worked for the Teamsters for 17 years at the ACME Warehouse until he retired in 1977. He was a former member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Mattydale.
Roy was predeceased by his wife of 50 years the former Florence Eno and is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Roy S. and Marjorie A. Hughes Jr. of North Syracuse, his grandchildren Eric Cheryl Hughes, Kimberly Joel Fowler all of Baldwinsville, Kelly Darren Recore of Pennellville, six great grandchildren Lauren and Jordan Hughes, Ryan and Zachary Fowler, and Paige and Collin Recore.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 12 to 2 pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Road, Mattydale followed by a funeral services at 2 pm with burial in White Chapel Memory Gardens in Dewitt. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society 6725 Lyons St. Box 7, East Syracuse, NY 13057.
