Alois "Al" L. Hundshamer Jr., 85, of Syracuse, passed away Friday at St. Joseph's Hospital with his loving wife and step-children at his side. A native of Syracuse, he was predeceased by his parents Alois L. Hundshamer Sr. in 1972 and Rose Sabeske Hundshamer in 1983; a brother, Leonard in Korea 1951; son, Kevin in 2002; step-son, Roy Stassi in 2006; and son, Eric in 2007.
Al was a World War II Marine Corp Veteran serving in the Pacific battles for Guam and Iwo Jima. He graduated from Holy Trinity School in 1937; St. John the Baptist Academy in 1941 and the University of Notre Dame in 1952. Al's business career was spent with AT&T as well as a pharmaceutical sales rep for the former Smith, Kline & French Laboratories, now Glaxo-Smith Kline. He was active in the community and sports programs both as a parks district coach and a volunteer. Al was also active in his Mattydale home parish, St. Margaret's Church. In 1974, he assisted in the formation of St. Margaret's Bingo which had a thirty year successful run until it disbanded in 2004.
Surviving are his spouse, Mary Toia Stassi Hundshamer; his daughter: Catherine Gene Shensky of Detroit; his son, Phil Hundshamer of Syracuse; daughter, Marilyn Jim Crofoot of Tipp City, OH; daughter, Janet Taki Perdou of Warners; son, Brian Hundshamer of PA; and son Doug Hundshamer of Thailand, his step-children Thomas Deborah Stassi of Charlotte NC, Rosemary James Mleziva of Dallas TX, Salvatore Kimberly Stassi of Fulton, several grandchildren and great grandchildren .
Friends may call from 4 to 7 pm Monday at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd. Mattydale. Services are 9:15 am Tuesday at the funeral home and 10 am at St. Margaret's Church. Burial with full military honors will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
