James “Jim” P. Maloney, Jr., 90, lifelong resident of Mattydale, passed away Monday, April 17th, 2023 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Jim was born to the late Marion (Straub) and James P. Maloney, Sr. He attended St. John the Baptists School. He joined the Boy Scouts in 1942 earning the rank of Life. Jim was drafted to the US Army in 1952 to serve in the Korean War.
Jim retired in 1990 after 27 years as a dispatcher for Onondaga County Fire Control. He begun as one of the original dispatchers when it was housed at the Mattydale Fire Department before it moved to Onondaga Hill. He was a life member of the Mattydale Volunteer Fire Dept. and former Fire Commissioner of SCFD #2, which he received many awards in the line of duty. Jim was elected in 1998 as the Town of Salina 3rd Ward Councilman. He was on the Board of Directors and was a lifelong member of the Salina Free Library. Jim was a voracious reader of history and also penned his own poetry. He co-wrote and published the song “Jeanie Johnston.” He was a member of the Dr. Tom Dooley Chorus, was an avid horticulturist and loved collecting firefighter memorabilia. Jim was a communicant of St. Margaret’s Church and volunteered as their gardener for many years.
In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his sister, Marilyn Maloney and his nephew, Patrick Savage.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, the former Cheryl (Scarlett); their two children: Donalea Maloney of Liverpool and Douglas (Michelle) Abbey of Pittsburgh, PA; a sister, Judy (Richard) Savage of Liverpool; two grandchildren, Jordyn (John Sullivan) Maloney and Jacob Abbey; and by several nieces and nephews.
