Janet A. (MacKenzie) Popenfuss, a life resident of the Eastwood community, passed away on September 17, 2023, at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse. She was born on April 7, 1946, in Syracuse, to the late Frederick and Byrle (Tanny) MacKenzie. Janet was a 1964 graduate of Eastwood High School.
She retired from Duffy's Heating and Air Conditioning as their full charge Bookkeeper. Before that, she had worked at various companies in the Syracuse area, including Greatwater. Outside of work, Janet found solace and joy in various hobbies and interests. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, cooking, and baking- activities that allowed her creative spirit to soar. She also had a penchant for collecting snow babies. These delicate figurines brought a touch of winter magic into her home all year round. She and her husband maintained a family summer camp at Brennan’s Beach for the past six years. Janet was a perfect mix of anarchy and grace. One of her greatest joys was being the family party and event planner. She took immense pleasure in organizing gatherings where loved ones could come together to create lasting memories. She lived her life always seeking to bring joy and happiness to those around her. Selfless and giving, she was known for her generosity.
Janet was predeceased by her infant son, Jeffrey, in 1970. His memory remained etched in her heart as a constant reminder of the fragility and preciousness of life.
She leaves behind her husband, Dale Popenfuss, whom she had been married to for 54 years; their two children: Nancy Popenfuss of Syracuse and Alex (Melissa) Popenfuss of Manlius; her sister, Arlene (Mike) MacKenzie-Mitchell; a devoted grandmother of five grandchildren: Amanda Rae (Thomas) Armstead, Ashley Popenfuss, Jessica Popenfuss, Alex Popenfuss Jr., and Dale "DJ" Popenfuss; and her four great-grandchildren: Alek, Carter, Camden, and Carson. Although they may not have had as much time together as Janet would have wished for, her love for them was immeasurable.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Janet’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
