John Paul Hrynyk, 75, of Liverpool, passed away Tuesday, November 12, at his home. He was born in Stuttguard, Germany to the late Paul and Anna Hrynyk and was predeceased by his brother, Walter and twin brother, Raymond.
John was a U.S. Army veteran who served in Viet Nam with the 1st Air Cavalry and the 4th Infinity Division earning both the Presidential Unit Citation and Meritorious Unit Commendation ribbons.
John graduated with an associate’s degree from Onondaga Community College.
After being discharged from the Army, John proceeded to open Joy Books bookstore. John went on to hold a myriad of occupations as a diesel mechanic, mold maker, recycling plant manager, insurance sales and property manager. He was a jack of all trades and a master of some.
John had a plethora of interests that he enjoyed throughout his life – scuba diving, cave crawling, fishing, hiking, camping, golfing with friends, metallurgy and jewelry making are just a few. John enjoyed learning and researching local history with a focus on the Split Rock Quarry Explosion & the Solvay Process. John, along with Richard Miller, gave guided tours of the quarry and many lectures on the subject. In his later years, John and Susan travelled to too many places to list to enjoy the local museums, zoos, and usually enjoy a concert, play or casino.
John, who always had a story to tell or a joke to share, will be remembered by his wife, Susan, daughter, Christine Abbatiello (Martin) and grandson, Martin John.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Onondaga Historical Association, 321 Montgomery St, Syracuse, NY 13202.
