Leona A. Latour, 95, of North Syracuse, passed away Thursday, April 15th surrounded by her loving family at Malta House. Born on August 28, 1925 in Paul Smiths, NY to the late Louis and Nellie (LaMay) Abare. Leona was a 1943 graduate of Saranac Lake High School. She worked as a NY Telephone Company operator, a home health aide and finally as an outreach case management worker for Franklin County Association of Senior Citizens before retiring. Leona truly enjoyed helping ours and was a kind and compassionate person. Leona was an avid sewer and knitter and enjoyed donating her mittens and hats to various charities. Leona liked to play cards and spend time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Leona enjoyed traveling with her sisters and cherished Abare Family Reunions.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Katherine M. Whisher, sisters, Margaret McClatchie and, Theresa Stockwell, along with 5 brothers, Eugene, Donald, Lawrence, Sydney, and Kenneth Abare.
Leona is survived by her children: Donna L. McGinnis of Saranac Lake, Ruth A. (John) Keach of Cicero, James A. Latour III of Punta Gorda, FL, David L. (Lisa) Latour of Brewerton; a sister Charlotte Bredlow of Belaire, MD; 8 grandchildren: Thomas McGinnis, Heather McGinnis, Pamela (Matt) Dwyer, Jessica (Erik) Hehl, Heath (Angela) Ivie, James (Jessica) Latour IV, Jacque Latour, and Allyson Latour; 10 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Road, Mattydale and will be live streamed on our Facebook page. Friends may visit with the family following the Service until 12:00 pm. A private burial will be in the family plot at St. Bernard Cemetery in Saranac Lake, NY at a later date.
