Thaddeus "Ted" J. Liro, Lt, Col. USAR, Ret. 100, of Mattydale, passed away Friday at the Cottages in Cicero with his family by his side. Born in Oswego Ted grew up in Solvay and resided in Mattydale for the past 63 years. He was a graduate of Solvay High School and then entered the military through the ROTC program.
Ted served in the Army during WWII, participating in several major campaigns including Normandy, the Rhineland, Northern France and Central Europe. After being discharge with the rank of 1st Lieutenant, he joined the Army Reserves until his retirement in 1975 as a Lt. Colonel.
He was a life retired member of the Mattydale Volunteer Fire Department and he was a past Commander and Life member of the American Legion Post 1297 in North Syracuse. He was recently honored as the oldest member of the American Legion in Onondaga County. He was also a communicant of St. Margaret's Church in Mattydale.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 70 years, the former Margaret Sullivan in 2013. Ted was survived by his daughter and son-in-law Peg and Carl Wulfert of Central Square; two granddaughters Lisa and Kevin Kitzman, Heather and Craig Stevens; his three great grandchildren Ella, Weston and Cooper; five siblings Sophie Charles, Vicki Blanco, Mary Medyn, Josephine (Ed) Pellizzari, Bernice Medyn; a sister-in-law Betty Medyn; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Monday from 4 - 7 pm at Krueger Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 9:30 Tuesday at the funeral home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale, followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10 am at St. Margaret's Church. Burial with full military honors will be in Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
