Mary Claire Roock, 80, passed away on October 5, 2023. She was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Marian (Donahue) Roock and by a brother, Thomas Roock.
She graduated from St. Patrick’s High School on Tipperary Hill, received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from St. Bonaventure University and her master’s in social work from Syracuse University. Mary Claire started working for Onondaga County first as a case worker and then as a Probation Officer. She retired from North Syracuse schools after 27 years as a School Social Worker for both Cicero North Syracuse High School and Gillette Road Middle School. She was thankful to have had the opportunity to travel the US and other countries throughout the years.
Mary Claire always enjoyed music, playing piano and guitar, and had a life-long interest in gardening and crafting including jewelry making, painting, stained glass, sewing, knitting/crocheting, and embroidery. She also couldn’t pass up trying a new recipe. Mary Claire often said her claim to fame was falling down the back stairs at age 10, resulting in a mechanical pencil penetrating her heart, followed by open heart surgery, and was included in the 1954 issue of Who’s who in America. Many wonderful times were spent at the family camp on Oneida Lake, boating, swimming, waterskiing, and fishing. She shared a love of cross-country skiing and horseback riding with her sister. Every day was an adventure. Mary Claire had a great sense of humor, was a kind and true friend and a blessing for being in our lives.
She is survived by her sister, Ann Roock and several cousins.
Contributions in Mary Claire’s memory may be made to St. Margaret’s Church, 200 Roxboro Rd., Mattydale, NY 13211.
