John A. "Rinky" Mento, 97, of Mattydale, died Tuesday at James Square. Rinky was born in Syracuse and resided in Mattydale since 1939. He was the son of the late Joseph and Concetta (Aloi) Mento.
Rinky retired in 1985 after working many years as a machinist for Allied Tool. Prior to that, he had worked at Kane and Roach. He worked at Krueger Funeral Home as a valued employee for several years, was a life member with more than 50 years active service for the Mattydale Volunteer Fire Dept. and served as their former Assistant Chief. Rinky was a member of the 3rd Ward Men's Club, the Syracuse Turners on North Salina St., the Ohio Ridge Runners and the Redfield Fish and Game Club. He bowled for many years and participated in many leagues in the area. Rinky was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing at his camp on Hooper Dooper Road in the town of Ohio. He was a longtime communicant of St. Margaret's Church.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Doris (Stinger), in 2012.
Surviving are their three daughters: Therese Deegan of Clay, Sandra (Walter) Piotrowski of Oswego, and Mary (Michael) Bronner of Baldwinsville; 6 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

Friends may call on Friday from 5-7 pm at the Mattydale Volunteer Fire Dept. Saturday, a 10 am Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Margaret's Church. Burial will be in Pine Plains Cemetery, Clay.
