William "Bill" E. Owens, 79, formerly of 506 Boston Road in Mattydale, died Tuesday at the VA Medical Center. Bill was a native of Syracuse and had resided in Mattydale for more than 40 years including 5 years at the Bessie Riordan Senior Apartments before moving to the VA Medical Center in 2009. He was the youngest of six children born to Robert and Laura Owens.
Bill was an Army Signal Corps Veteran who served during the Korean Conflict receiving a Unit Silver Star. He retired in 1991 after 43 years as a pattern maker for Crouse Hinds in Syracuse. Over a period of many years, Bill donated over 18 gallons of blood to the Red Cross, volunteered to deliver bread for the North Area Meals on Wheels, Salina Civic Center, and Bessie Riordan Senior Apartments. He was also a volunteer at the Salina Civic Seniors, an organization of very special people, was the past president of the Crouse Hinds Bowling League and a member of its golf league. Bill was always available to several friends and neighbors as transportation to doctor's appointments and to assist with running errands. He was a special uncle to many.
Bill was predeceased by four of his five siblings.
Surviving are his brother: Russell W. Owens of North Syracuse and several nieces and nephews especially Kathy and George Giordano.
Friends may call on Friday from 4-7 pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. Prayer will begin at the funeral home on Saturday, 11:30 am followed by a 12:00 pm Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret's Church. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of the VA medical Center 8th Floor, to the friends and neighbors at Bessie Riordan Apartments, and to the volunteers at the Nutrition Center at Salina Civic Center.
