Maryann “Batcha” L. Pertilla, 85, lifelong resident of Syracuse, passed away Thursday, April 29th at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Maryann was the daughter of the late Walter and Maryann (Pernakowski) Massaro and grew up on the North side of Syracuse where she was a 1952 graduate from North High School.
Maryann retired in 1982 after more than 20 years as a school bus attendant for the Syracuse City School District. She also worked for the Parks & Recreation Department as a crossing guard, lunch aid, and hall monitor. Maryann was a three-season athlete, playing baseball with the Turners Baseball League and a drama major performing with the Pompeian Players throughout her high school years. She bowled with several local leagues and was an avid Green Bay Packers Cheesehead. Maryann attended the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Church.
She was predeceased by her husband of 36 years, Carlyle Perilla, in 2004, a daughter, Linda Pertilla, in 2020 and by a brother, Leonard Walter Massaro in 2000.
Maryann is survived by her seven children: Marilyn Dixon, Karen (Walter) Howard, Anthony, Carlyle, Joseph, and Carolyne Pertilla, and Vanessa Fitzgerald; 12 grandchildren especially Donte, Tony, and Joshua, whom she helped raise; and 12 great grandchildren.
