Janie Redfearn, 79, of DeWitt, NY, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at Crouse Hospital. Born in Castlewood, South Carolina to the late Willie and Lela (Houston) Sims, Janie grew up in Augusta, Georgia, where she graduated from Lucy Lane High School. She then moved to Harlem, NY, and then to Syracuse, NY, where she attended Onondaga Community College.
She retired March 1997 after 29 years as an adult case worker for Onondaga County Department of Social Services. She was a longtime member of Elohim Chapter #38 OES and Elohim Amaranth Court #10 she served in several positions. She was a member of Tucker Missionary Baptist Church of Syracuse, NY.
From her union to James B. Redfearn whom she later divorced, she had three children: Phyllis, Michael Sr. and Terri Redfearn. She was predeceased by son Michael Sr. in 2003. She is survived by daughters Phyllis and Terri, both of DeWitt, NY, grandson, Michael (Yolanda) Redfearn; four siblings, Dorothy Burke of North Syracuse, Dora (Isaiah) Anderson of Rochester, NY, Major and David Sims, both of VA., four great grandchildren: Giovanna and Legend Redfearn and Mehki and Kamiyah Brantley. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
