Cornelius Riley, III

Cornelius "Red" Riley, III, 91, died Monday, November 6th at home with Hospice care and his family by his side. Born January 21, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Marion (McGuire) and Cornelius F. Riley, Jr., Red grew up in the Eastwood area. He received his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from O.C.C.

Red was a US Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He retired as a Sergeant from the Syracuse Police Department in 1975 and then worked for the former Niagara Mohawk for 10 years before retiring completely in the late 1980's. Red was a life member of the Police Benevolent Association. He and his wife traveled extensively throughout the US and maintained summer camps in Rhode Island and Westerly near family and Cape Vincent, NY in later years. Red was a member of St. Margaret's Church in Mattydale.

He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, the former Anne Root, in 2016, a son, John "Barney" Riley, in 1982 and by a sister, Elizabeth Cosola.

Red is survived by his children: Kathleen (Ray) Svoboda of Liverpool, Meme (Bill) O'Connor of West Monroe, Michael (JoAnne) Riley of Albany, and Peggy Singer of Liverpool; a sister: Ann McGarrity of Tampa, FL; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 4-7 pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. Prayer Services will begin on Thursday, 9:30 am, at the funeral home followed by a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Margaret's Church. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery, Syracuse.
