Mary G. Root, 85, of W. Molloy Rd. Mattydale, went home to be with her lord on Friday at St. Joseph's hospital. Born in Spafford, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Julia Hill and grew up in Mattydale where she resided for most of her life.
Mary was a 1940 graduate of North Syracuse High School and worked as a nurse's aid during WWII. She retired in 1983 after 20 years as a customer service clerk for the Onondaga County Water Authority and the former Salina Water Department. Mary was a long time member of St. Margaret's RC Church in Mattydale and was a member of its Altar Rosary Society, the Legion of Mary, the funeral choir, the Socialites senior group and served as a Eucharistic Minister. She was also a Life Member of the Mattydale Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the Salina Civic Seniors as well as the Women of the Moose Lodge #625 in Solvay. Mary had a passion for playing cards especially with her girlfriends in the Friday night "Nan Poker Club".
She is survived by the love of her life and husband of 66 years Herman, a daughter Linda J. Jack Lynch of Charlotte, NC, three sons James Michael Chris Root, Gregory J. Lynn Root both of Liverpool, Michael F. Kathy Root of Grantsville, MD, nine Grandchildren and seven Great Grandchildren.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 pm on Monday Mary's 86th Birthday at the Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Road, Mattydale. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 am Tuesday in St. Margaret's Church in Mattydale. Committal services will be in St. Mary's Resurrection Chapel, Dewitt.
