Hattie Mae Simmons, 67, of Syracuse, died peacefully Tuesday after a long illness at Rosewood Heights Nursing Home. She was a native of Ehrhardt, SC and was a longtime resident of Syracuse. Hattie Mae was the daughter of the late Leroy and Mary Lee Smith.
She attended Central High School in Syracuse and worked as a cook for many years at the V.A. Medical Center, the Rescue Mission, and Hutchings Psychiatric Center. Hattie Mae was an avid bingo player, loved to cook, and enjoyed entertaining her family and friends. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church. Hattie Mae was a very giving person and will be missed by all who were blessed enough to know her.
In addition to her parents, Hattie Mae was predeceased by her grandson: Michael Rondinello in 2002, her former husband Robert Lee Simmons in 2008, and her three sisters: Carrie Torrence, Cerise Farrow, and Martha Burke.
Surviving are her five daughters: Janice John Hicks of Randallstown, MD; Cynthia Terrell Franklin of Muscle Shoals, AL; Sonya Simmons and Robin Smith, both of Syracuse and Latoya Will Solomon of Yemassee, SC; her five siblings: Geneva Folk, Ruth Ogletree, Inez Mack, Laura Smith and Roy Smith, all of Syracuse; 12 grandchildren: ODell, her "Boo", Dayshelle, Quinton, Troy, Jamar, Ja'Bria, Destiny, Zyairah, Malcom, Jahlayah, Tania, and Maxwell; 8 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call Monday from 10am-12pm at Tucker Missionary Baptist Church, 515 Oakwood Ave, Syracuse. Funeral services will begin at 12pm followed by burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
