Lester J. Spier, 77, longtime resident of Campbell Road in Mattydale, died Monday at the VA Hospital. Lester was the youngest of eight children born to the late William and Bertha Spier.
He was a graduate of East Syracuse High School and an Army veteran who served as an MP in the Occupation of Germany following World War II. Lester was employed by the Prosperity Company, Conrail, and most recently, Dunk & Bright Furniture. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed hunting, playing softball, horseshoes, and bowling at Bowling Green Lanes in North Syracuse.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, the former Barbara Teachout; his daughter: Lori Ken Kopp of Mattydale; four sons: John Kathy Spier of AZ, Tom Pam Spier of Phoenix, NY, Tim Deb Spier, and Scott Beth Spier all of Mattydale; his six grandchildren: Johnny, Joe, Jim, Daniel, Kenny and Lilly; his two sisters: Betty Graboske and Jeanette Wright both of East Syracuse; and a brother: Fred Spier of Cicero.
Friends may call Monday from 5-8 pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. Services will be held Tuesday, 3pm at the funeral home followed by burial in Collamer Cemetery, East Syracuse. Contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Assn. CNY Chapter, 441 W.
