John Stankewitz, Sr., 89, of Breman Ave in Mattydale, died Thursday at Van Duyn Nursing Home. John was a native of Syracuse and had resided in Mattydale since 1950. He was the son of the late Vikenty and Anna Stankevich.
John was a World War II Army Veteran and had worked for many years at the Prosperity Company in Syracuse. He was a past commander of the Pere LeMoyne American Legion, a member of the Mattydale American Legion, the Polish Falcons, and the John Vendetti Italian American War Veterans Post in Syracuse. John was also a member of St. Margaret's Church.
John was predeceased by his wife, Rose in 2006 as well as his brother, Michael Stankevich and sister, Mary Lisowski.
Surviving are his daughter: Carol Robert Long of Patton, PA; his son: John Stankewitz Jr. of New York City; his four grandchildren: Matthew and Jill Long, Melanie Woods, and Mary Rose Speerstra; two sisters: Helen Merrill and Anna Stankevich, both of FL; and his brother: Peter Stankevich of North Syracuse.
Friends may call Sunday from 12-5pm at Krueger Funeral Home Inc., 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. Services are Monday, 11:00am at the funeral home followed by burial in Assumption Cemetery.
