John J. Stassi, 84, longtime resident of Mattydale, died Saturday at home. John was a native of the Syracuse area and resided in Mattydale for over 50 years. He was the son of the late Rosario and Rose Pauldine Stassi.
John attended Vocational High School before entering the Navy and serving as fire rescue during World War II. He was employed by the US Postal Service for over 50 years as a letter carrier before retiring. John was a member of the American Legion Post #1832 in Mattydale. He was a communicant of St. Margaret's Church where he volunteered on the Bingo Committee and at the Fish Fry; he was also a member of their Men's Society.
John was predeceased by three siblings in addition to his parents: Tom Stassi, Jo Heilman, and Lorraine Dickerman.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, the former Connie Labruzzo; five daughters: Mary Anne Stassi, Rose Hill, and Nancy Stassi, all of Mattydale; Josephine Scott Spears of Davison, MI, and Carol Stassi of Sarasota, FL; an adopted daughter: Jessica Zombrano of Cicero; his two sons: John Melissa of Madison, SD, and Mark of Syracuse; a brother: James Ruth Stassi of Syracuse; his brother-in-law, Harry Heilman of Syracuse; 21 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Thursday, 4-7 pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. Prayers will begin in the funeral home on Friday at 10:15 am followed by an 11am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Margaret's Church. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Mausoleum, Syracuse.
