John F. Toomey, Sr., 78, of Cicero, died Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Crouse Hospital. Born in New York City, John was the last surviving child of 6 born to the late Thomas and Josephine (Flahive) Toomey. He resided on Ashford Court in Mattydale for 37 years until relocating to Cicero in 2012.
John retired in 1970 as a New York City Police Officer. He co-operated Singer Mattydale Sewing Center with his sister, Mary Tracy, for 15 years in the 1980's. After that endeavor, John helped establish a family business with his children Express Embroidery/Papa Sports in Syracuse for the past 25 years. He was a member of the Police Benevolent Association in NYC. John was a longtime parishioner of St. Margaret's Church in Mattydale where he coordinated the CYO Youth Program, served as a Eucharistic Minister, taught their Baptismal Preparation Class, and was actively involved in numerous church functions.
He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Toomey, in 1991.
John is survived by two daughters: Barbara "Boo" (Glen) Miles of Cicero and Beth Toomey of Cicero; two sons: John F. (Lorie) Toomey, Jr. of Baldwinsville and Michael P. (Jane) Toomey of Cicero; his companion of 23 years, Mary Anne Stassi; eight grandchildren: Glen, Patrick, Taylor, Elizabeth, Megan, Tyler, Danny, and Grace; many nieces and nephews; and by his brothers and sisters-in-law: Barbara (Pat) Maiello, Henry (Margaret) Fried, Mae Toomey and Rose Toomey.
Contributions may be made to Prevention Network, 906 Spencer St., Syracuse NY 13204; a cause near to John's heart where his daughter, Beth, works to promote healthy behaviors and choices against additions and problem behaviors.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 3 - 7 pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, 10 am, at St. Margaret's Church, 203 Roxboro Rd., Mattydale. Entombment will be in Assumption Mausoleum, Syracuse.
