Richard "Dick" T. Vassar, 68, of Northwood Drive in Mattydale, died Friday at his home with his family at his side. He was a life resident of Mattydale and was the son of the late Charles and Geraldine Vassar. Dick graduated from North Syracuse High School and attended Onondaga Community College.
He was a Master Sergeant in the US Army serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. He then served 17 years in the Army reserves. Dick retired in 1993 after 18 years as a Lieutenant of the guards at Jamesville Penitentiary. He was a past Commander and former Chaplain of the VFW post #3146 and a member of the American Legion post #1832 both in Mattydale. He was a communicant of St. Margaret's Church and a member of the Syracuse Brigadiers since 1961 where he played the symbols and later became part of the honor guard. Dick was an avid NY Giants and NY Yankees fan but his favorite past time was spending time with his grandkids.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years the former JoAnn Pappalardo, four children Katrina, Elisabeth and Charles Vassar all of Syracuse, Katherine Vassar of Mattydale, a sister Marcia Vassar of Mattydale, and two grandchildren Logan and Ava.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 4 to 7 pm at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. Funeral Services will begin at 9:30 am Wednesday at the funeral home and 10 am at St. Margaret's church. Burial with military honors will be in Veteran's Memorial Cemetery.
